Dr. Jose Carmena is senior researcher at the Universidad Catolica de Valencia (UCV), Spain. From 2005 to 2023 he was Professor of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Neuroscience at the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Carmena received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) in 1995 and the University of Valencia (Spain) in 1997. Following those he received the M.S. degree in artificial intelligence and the Ph.D. degree in robotics both from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK) in 1998 and 2002 respectively. From 2002 to 2005 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Neurobiology and the Center for Neuroengineering at Duke University (Durham, NC). His main expertise is in neurotechnology, an area of high relevance for the restoration and enhancement of sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. Dr. Carmena is known for seminal studies showing how neural plasticity relates to the learning and consolidation of neuroprosthetic skills, and for the development of neurotechnology and closed-loop decoding algorithms for neuroprosthetic control. Dr. Carmena was also founder and co-CEO of iota Biosciences, a neurotechnology company developing next-generation nervous system-based therapies through wireless, ultra-small, low-power implantable devices. Dr. Carmena is fellow of the IEEE andrecipient of multiple awards including the McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Award (2017), the Bakar Fellowship (2012), the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Early Career Achievement Award (2011), the Aspen Brain Forum Prize in Neurotechnology (2010), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2010), and the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2009). Dr. Carmena has published more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in the top scientific journals and conferences and has been invited to give more than 150 scientific talks at academic institutions and conferences worldwide.
