Vesa Nissinen

Vesa Tapani Nissinen is a Finnish leadership scholar, military officer, and internationally recognized expert in leadership development, coaching psychology, and high-performance systems. With a career spanning academia, the military, and elite sport, he has become one of the key figures in advancing evidence-based leadership education both in Finland and globally.

Nissinen currently serves as Associate Professor of Management and Leadership at the University of Lapland and Professor of Practice in Leadership at Manav Rachna University in India. He also holds multiple visiting professorships across Europe, Asia, and Africa, including appointments at institutions such as Cranfield University (UK Defence Academy), the Estonian Defence University, and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

His academic and professional work focuses on transformational leadership, coaching psychology, and performance-oriented learning systems. He is best known as the creator of the Deep Leadership model, a research-based framework that integrates feedback, reflection, and behavioral development to enhance leadership effectiveness. This model has been widely implemented in military organizations, educational systems, and leadership training programs internationally. Finnish Defense Forces have used Deep Lead Program for military leadership education officially since 1998. 

Before his academic career, Nissinen served extensively in the Finnish Defence Forces, reaching the rank of Colonel (General Staff Officer). His leadership roles included Director of the Finnish Defence Forces Research Agency, Director of the Faculty of Leadership and Military Pedagogy at the Finnish National Defence University, and Special Advisor to the Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces. He also held an international command role as Commander of the EUFOR ALTHEA operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Nissinen has played a central role in designing and implementing leadership education systems, including the Finnish Defence Forces leadership training program, NATO staff officer courses in Finland, FRONTEX officer training, and comprehensive feedback-based development models. His work emphasizes ethical leadership, trust, organizational culture, and continuous learning as foundations for high performance.

In addition to his academic and military contributions, Nissinen is actively involved in international sport leadership. He serves as President of the Finnish Shooting Sport Federation and Director of the ISSF Academy, contributing to the development of coaching and performance systems in elite shooting sports globally.

He holds a Doctor of Education (PhD) from the University of Helsinki and has authored numerous scientific publications and books, including Deep Leadership and From Deep Learning to Deep Leadership. His research has explored leadership behavior, personality, and performance in military and organizational contexts.

For his contributions, Nissinen has received several prestigious honors, including the Finnish honorary title of Counsellor of Education (Opetusneuvos), the Order of the Cross of Liberty (3rd Class), and the Golden Cross of Merit of Finnish Sports.

Through his interdisciplinary work, Vesa Nissinen continues to influence leadership education and coaching practices worldwide, bridging theory and practice across military, academic, and high-performance environments.
